About the Author
Reed Wicander is a geology professor at Central Michigan University, where he teaches Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Prehistoric Life, and Invertebrate Paleontology and was previously chair of the department. He obtained his B.A. at San Diego State University and his Ph.D. at UCLA. His main research interests involve various aspects of Paleozoic palynology, specifically the study of acritarchs, on which he has published numerous papers. He is a past president of the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists and currently a councilor of the International Federation of Palynological Societies and chair of the Acritarch Subcommission of the Commission Internationale de Microflore du Paleozoique. He has coauthored several geology textbooks with James S. Monroe.
James S. Monroe is Professor Emeritus of Geology at Central Michigan University, where he taught Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Prehistoric Life, and Stratigraphy and Sedimentology beginning in 1975 and served as chair of the Geology department. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Montana. He has coauthored several textbooks with Reed Wicander and has interests in Cenozoic geology and geologic education. Monroe now lives in Chico, California, where he remains active in geology by teaching courses to a large group of retirees.

Well organized and informative for entry level learner

I just finished an online-based geology course (with lab elements) that relied on this as its textbook.
I am previously trained in several disciplines other than geology and, in fact, had managed to finish a bachelors and two masters without ever having taken a physical science course...hence geology now in preparation for a teaching credentialing program.
Compared to the type of low-graphic, densely-written introductory texts of nearly two decades ago, this text made geology accessible for just about anyone. The authors/publishers of this text generated a very user-friendly layout that repeatedly drew focus to important terms and geological functions. Many examples and analogies were used to illustrate more complex concepts. In general, it was an enjoyable reading and learning experience.
Overall, I found this to be an well-organized and designed introductory geology text that would be handy for even a casual rock enthusiast to have on hand.

This was a teacher edition but it worked well for this class. There are study guide and topic cards at the end of the textbook.

Topic Clearly and Effectively Presented

The seller was very helpful in answering my questions about this book, and the book arrived--in excellent condition--within one week of order. Great seller! The textbook is easy to follow, has great illustrations and a terrific chapter review section in the back. It is a good purchase for anyone wishing to know more about the physical properties of earth.
