She depicted the sufferings of Javanese women fettered by tradition, unable to study, secluded, and who must be prepared to participate in polygamous marriages with men they don't know. Raden Adjeng Kartini loved her father deeply, although it is clear that her deep affection for him became yet another obstacle to the realisation of her ambitions. He was sufficiently progressive to allow his daughters schooling until the age of 12 but at that point the door to further schooling was firmly closed. In his letters, her father also expressed his affection for R.A. Kartini. Eventually, he gave permission for R.A. Kartini to study to become a teacher in Batavia (now Jakarta), although previously he had prevented her from cral of her pen friends worked on her behalf to support Kartini in this endeavour. And when finally Kartini's ambition was thwarted, many of her friends expressed their disappointment. In the end her plans to study in the Netherlands were transmuted into plans to journey to Batavia on the advice of Mrs. Abendanon that this would be best for R.A. Kartini and her younger sister, R.Ayu Rukmini. Nevertheless, in 1903 at the age of 24, her plans to study to become a teacher in Batavia came to nothing. In a letter to Mrs. Abendanon, R.A. Kartini wrote that the plan had been abandoned because she was going to be married ..."In short, I no longer desire to take advantage of this opportunity, because I am to be married..". This was despite the fact that for its part, the Dutch Education Department had finally given permission for R.A. Kartini and R.Ay. Rukmini to study in Batavia. As the wedding approached, R.A. Kartini's attitude towards Javanese traditional customs began to change. She became more tolerant. She began to feel that her marriage would bring good fortune for her ambition to develop a school for native women. In her letters, R.A. Kartini mentioned that not only did her esteemed husband support her desire to develop the woodcarving industry in Jepara and the school for native women, but she also mentioned that she was going to write a book. Sadly, this ambition was unrealised as a result of her premature death in 1904 at the age of 25.

Through these letters, written between 1899 and 1904, the compassion, growth, humility, and pride of a young Indonesian woman, Raden Adjeng Kartini, reach out for the reader to embrace and hold dear. Raden Kartini wrote these letters between the ages of twenty and twenty-five, when she suddenly died after childbirth. Her formal education, rare for girls of her time, stopped at adolescence. At fifteen, she and her sisters were tutored in "feminine" handicrafts by a young Dutch woman, Mevrouw Ovink-Soer, an ardent feminist and socialist who articulated and nurtured the seeds of independence already planted in Kartini. Kartini's goal was education for Javanese girls, a radical thought at the time and at odds with her Moslem religion. But as envisioned by Kartini, education was the way to "set the rice upon the table for every Javanese." Indonesia, a Dutch colony for more than two hundred years, had a small but vocal Dutch group concerned with the treatment of the Indonesian people. Through her father's position in local government, Kartini met and corresponded with many Dutch people sympathetic to their plight. About the Author
Raden Adjeng Kartini, Lady Kartini, (21 April 1879 – 17 September 1904), sometimes known as Raden Ayu Kartini, was a prominent Indonesian national heroine from Java. She was also a pioneer in the area of education for girls and women's rights for Indonesians. Born into an aristocratic Javanese family in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, she attended a Dutch language primary school. She aspired to further education but the option was unavailable to her and other girls in Javanese society. She came into contact with various officials and influential people including J.H. Abendanon, in charge of implementing the Dutch Ethical Policy. Kartini wrote letters about her feelings and they were published in a Dutch magazine and later as: Out of Darkness to Light, Women's Life in the Village and Letters of a Javanese Princess. Her birthday is now celebrated as Kartini Day in Indonesia. She took an interest in mysticism and opposed polygamy. Her advocacy for the education of girls was continued by her sisters. Kartini Schools were named for her a fund established in her name to fund the education of girls.

This book is a collection of letters by Raden KARTINI, the daughter of a rather enlightened Javanese nobleman, who allowed his daughters some school education. At the beginning of the 20th century this was quite exceptional in a native society where the overwhelming majority of even the male population was illiterate and where an educated woman was considered to be something inconceivable. The young Kartini had some acquaintance with a few enlightened Dutch people, who appreciated her thirst for education and provided her with some books, thereby enabling her to acquire a good knowledge of western civilisation. Kartini had a lively correspondence with these persons, which were rather unrepresentative of the average colonial white people. Her letters have later been edited as this book, whose original Dutch title should be translated as "Through Darkness to Light". The letters were written in Dutch, a language of which Kartini had a good command and which was at the time the only vehicle for higher education in Indonesia.
In her letters, Kartini stressed that education is a precious good, also from a moral point of view, to which every person, women included, is entitled. Her book is a cry for liberation of women from the cultural bondage to which they were condemned in traditional Javanese society. Kartini is considered to be a torchbearer for progressive ideas and education by Indonesian nationalists and feminists. While recognizing that the Javanese had a lot to learn from the progressive side of western culture, she was of course critical of the coarse, materialistic side of it, which predominated in colonial society. Unfortunately, Kartini died at the age of 25, giving birth to her first child.
This is a very interesting book for those interested in the impact of western thought on indiginous people or the emnacipation of women. It is obligatory reading for anyone interested in the history of Indonesia during the colonial period.

Bad text

The book I received was put through a bad word recognition program without an editor from a copy of the original. Thus the paragraphs, indentations and punctuation were garbage making reading very difficult. Several words, names and dates were misread by the program. Mine was a blank covered edition, not the striped icon edition which was fine. I believe it was the newest General Books edition, so if you wish to read this, buy an older edition.

M. William Phelps wrote more than twenty non-fiction books and is the star of “Dark Minds” on the Investigation Discovery channel. He wrote “The Devil’s Rooming House” and ‘The Devil’s Right Hand”, and lives in a rural farming community. The cover shows a covered bridge. Bridges were covered to keep the rain and snow from their wooden planks so horse’s hoofs wouldn’t slip on wet wood. This book has eight true crimes that occurred in New England states over the last three centuries. I think he covered too wide a range. The stories are of varying interest and importance. The ‘Introduction’ discusses murder in general. People kill for love, money, or revenge. Most murderers and their victims know each other.

Chapter 1 tells about a murder in Rhode Island in February 1673. Rebecca Cornell was murdered in her house and her body partly burned. Her son was convicted and hanged. William Beadle’s wife and four children were found murdered in their Connecticut home (Chapter 2). Beadle’s business was doing poorly and he didn’t want his family to suffer. Later he killed himself in November 1782. [“Family suicides” also happened in Wisconsin in the 1890's, “Wisconsin Death Trip”.] A woman was attacked in her New Hampshire home in September 1821 (Chapter 3). Her daughter accused Daniel Farmer. He was convicted and hanged. During the economic depression of June 1879 John Kemmler killed his young daughters in Holyoke Massachusetts (Chapter 4). He was afraid for their future because of their poverty. Kemmler was hanged.

Chapter 5 tells about organized crime in Boston Massachusetts from the 1930's to the late 1960's. In December 1931 new men took over organized crime by eliminating the competition. In the fall of 1961 there was a gang war, the Winter Hill Gang won. Whitey Bulger was not just the leader but cooperated with the FBI. Bulger went into hiding in 1995 but was caught by the FBI sixteen years later. Chapter 6 tells about a rock band. One member had a wealthy great aunt and lived in her three-decker house. This aunt supported him then made a will naming him as her sole heir. Then she had an accident, she appeared to have fallen down the stairs. A year later one member of that band told a friend what really happened, and he went to the police. There was a confession and convictions.

Chapter 7 tells about the death of a man who made signs and lettered trucks and cars. Was he killed by a horse in the barn? His head was crushed. There were spent shell casings on the floor. His wife had rebellious children from her first marriage. The son had dried blood drops on his pants. He later confessed and said his mother encouraged him! They were convicted. A wife went out jogging at night and never returned (Chapter 8). The investigation led to the caretaker on a large estate whose owner was on vacation; the caretaker had a record. Then the body was found hidden on the estate. The caretaker was convicted of the murder. The author warns against taking the same route when jogging. [He is wrong; the better solution for a long female jogger is to carry a pistol for defense.]

About the Author
Shaomin Li, born during the Maoist era in China, studied painting and drawing with renowned artists Xie Zhigao and Ning Daming. During the Cultural Revolution he was drafted by the People’s Liberation Army to produce works of art. After Mao died in 1976, he was ordered to paint Mao’s portrait for the official state memorial service. When Chinese universities reopened after 1976, Li attended Peking University to study economics. In 1982 he began graduate studies in the United States, earning a Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton University. He later conducted research at Harvard University as a post-doctoral fellow. Dr. Li now is Eminent Scholar and Professor of International Business at Old Dominion University. His research focuses on the global business environment, especially the governance environment in societies that are undergoing rapid transformation. Dr. Li has published 12 books and over 100 research articles. His writings have appeared in Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The New York Times, and Forbes. His research has also been featured in The Economist. In 2008 he was the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award by the Governor of Virginia. Professor Li has extensive business experience. He was a director of AT&T EastGate Services and the founding CEO of iEast.com, Ltd. (Hong Kong). He has also served in an advisory capacity at the United Nations, Fidelity Investments, and Johnson & Johnson.

I think this book is perfect for understanding the basics of how business is done in China/Asia and how that differs from the way business is done in America. It explains things in a basic language that is easy to understand and relate to. I have learned even more from this book, than from the near 4 months I've spent living in Shanghai. It goes into a bit more detail and explains rather than just spewing facts. The book goes though why relationships are so important in Chinese culture and why we don't use the same system in America. It reminds foreigners to be careful with the assets they have in China, or want to have, because even with good relationships, foreign business is still foreign business. The book will go further in detail as whether the Chinese system is more effective or if the American way is more effective.
Without giving too much away I think this is a great book for any beginner looking to understand how and why Chinese do business how they do. In addition it will give a multi-cultural perspective on if there really is a better way to do business. It is a great book and it would be my first recommendation if someone was interested in this subject.

This book help foreigners to understand the difference of cultural aspect of business. Since the author is Chinese,so he can explain all the things properly. Apart from that the title of book -"Together or Separate checks" also show the biggest difference between two countries. China cares more about the group ,whereas USA focuses on the individual. A Great Introduction To Chinese Culture

This book gives a perfect introduction into the world of Chinese culture. When most Americans come to China, they don’t understand the major social differences that cause society to behave so differently. After reading this book, there was one quote that I believe perfectly describes the differences between American and Chinese society. The quote says, “Americans follow rules, and Chinese rely on relations to conduct business.” [Li 10] From my experience in China, I can validate all of the points made in this book. Not only do they thoroughly explain how best to conduct business in the Chinese setting, but they also give the reader an insight into every day Chinese life, explaining the importance of relationships and relation-based governance in China.
The book also goes on to explain key points about the Chinese government and how the People’s Republic of China conducts business. How the government interacts with the business sector plays a major role on the terms and conditions of business deals. Where some people (mostly Americans) settle business deals using lawyers, others may settle them (mostly Chinese) using private parties and backdoor deals.
This book will be extremely helpful to those looking to come to China to conduct business. Not only can a businessman benefit from this book, but also anyone coming to China can use this book to get a brief understanding of why nobody waves at you when you walk down the street in Shanghai. Having the knowledge that this book provides will make your experience in China easier and more comprehensible.

Shaomin Li does a superb job in illustrating the often hard to describe differences between the East and the West. Whether it's the explanation of China's relation based society in comparison to America's rule based society or the illustrative explanations of human behavior influenced by culture, Shaomin Li provides valuable insight on how to conduct business in China. He pinpoints the tricky cultural differences and the importance of cultural awareness. As time progresses and technology advances, cultures of varying counties slowly become more uniform or "westernized" so to speak, but China has not. The country is rich of culture and far different than any others I've personally experienced. From business manners and human behavior to government environments and relationship developments, Li not only proves that the East and West conduct business differently, but explains the often unrecognized reasons why.

After spending four months working and studying in China, it is still difficult for me to put into words why the mentality, work ethic and culture of China is so different. Li's work pinpoints it exactly. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in doing business or building relations in China. It will help immensely with trying to understand not only how the cultures vary but why, which is far more enlightening.

I'm glad I read this after my four months in China. It not only gave me a better understand, but it also allowed my experiences and observations to come full circle.

Satisfying and intriguing - 4 stars

I passed this book over several times because I have recently been burnt by a couple of really awful stories from unknown authors that got really great reviews and also because I hate auto racing with a passion. But I took a chance on it and I'm so glad I did. It was nothing like I expected and I was sucked in after the first chapter. The male MC, Colton, was indeed a race car driver, but he was also CEO of his own company. But the story focused very little on his driving career, which I appreciated. I was very intrigued by him from the start and the author did a fantastic job painting him, making it very easy to visualise him. Her descriptions were very well done all around, making it easy to form a picture in my mind of the people, places and things she incorporates to bring her story to life.

I often don't bond well with female MC's and recently have endured some truly awful ones, but I really liked Rylee. I didn't find her whiny or weak, despite the tragedy she had suffered and the long-term effects from it. I felt her past was handled just right and wasn't placed center stage in the story. She was certainly changed and affected by it but she was moving on in her life despite her loss and grief. I loved that she was feisty and made Colton work for it. Once or twice she caved too easily but she made up for it with her spunk and her deep belief that there was more to Colton than the arrogant, fickle playboy he appeared to be.

Colton was gorgeous, charismatic and wickedly sexy. He was a true alpha-male, but without the control issues you see in a lot of these stories. He didn't believe in love or committment, didn't think he was capable and covered whatever deep damage that had been inflicted on him. But from their first date Rylee made him stumble, and he was far from unaffected by her. She gets to him from the start despite his denial and his belief he can just get her out of his system and move on, business as usual. We see cracks in his self-assured, impassive veneer that reveal the vulnerability inside him and the first big reveal of how wrecked the poor man is comes at the end.

The slow build of their relationship is intriguing, funny, sweet and angsty. It's full of twists and turns and keeps you engaged and often frustrated. They both make mistakes and challenge one another and occasionally behave like asses in the process but the touching moments in between are worth the irritation.

I'm pleased with this first installment of the story, but I will say that it's clear the writer was influenced by Fifty Shades. While the story and characters are not at all the same, she 'borrowed' heavily from FSoG in a few places and anyone who is familiar with that story will easily see it. Once or twice I recognised lines that appeared to be directly lifted from E. L James' trilogy. Still, the story as a whole was original.

I give Driven four stars, which is high praise from me. There are some issues with phrasing and run-on sentences as well as some some typos and misuse of words i.e, using 'plain' for 'plane', but for the most part the editing isn't awful. All in all, this is a solid first installment and well worth the read.

Pale "Fifty Shades" wannabe

Am I reading a different book than everybody else? I'm done with third of it and I can not force myself to finish. Writing is OK, if taking itself too seriously, like the author is trying too hard. Seems like a very pale imitation of "Fifty Shades", with way too many similarities to be accidental. Language is repetitive and boring, the plot is so close to "Fifty" at least at this point (and it's a trilogy too) that makes me not to want to read it any further.
But worst of all- the characters. If I ever met people like that in real life (which, thank God, I won't, because they are completely unbelievable) I would contemplate murder in first 5 minutes. Or a suicide. They speak in cliches. They ARE cliches.
Rylee talks about her own "amethyst eyes, thik eyelashes, full M of my lips, more than plentiful assets, curves, chestnut curls" etc on several occasions and then whines how she is completely ordinary and boring and she doesn't know what the guy sees in her. Oh, and to top it off, she works with orphans. Just an every day amethyst eyed angel of love with tragic past. Her perfection and simpering and complete lack of humor make me want to slap her silly.
Colton is a walking cliche who speaks in such a manner that would make me laugh in his face if I ever met him. He is (of course) tall, dark, beautiful, with emerald eyes (noticing the theme for jewel tones for eyes yet?) with hints of tragic past and - wait for it- a race car driver! With famous Hollywood power couple parents! Super rich! Playboy who tragically doesn't believe in romance (he even says it outright "I don't believe in romance", but we all know that our amethyst- eyed angel of mercy and humility will reform him in the end). He is also a womanizing bad boy with some vague reference to signing agreements and negotiations with his dates ("Fifty Shades", anyone?). He is referred many times to as a rebel, but it is not quite clear what he is rebelling against, because so far, he is exactly like any other rich good looking spoiled d..k out there, who also speaks in ridiculous sentences, promising the woman he is trying to seduce the best sex of her life, cure for her frigidity (literally), seriously notices that "fear of discovery makes everything stronger. Orgasm" (because that statement needed clarification). And she melts. Because he is such a bad boy and such a rebel.
If you want to read this exact book but better written and with characters that make you like them, read or re-read "Fifty Shades of Gray" trilogy. This is a poor pale copy that is trying too hard.
Only reason why it is not 1 star, is the writing is not absolutely hopeless, and if the author ever finds her own idea for a story, instead of copying someone else, (and develops a sense of humor and starts writing about more likable characters), she might become good.

I liked this BUT....

The heroine gives in way too easily! Why do authors think it's nice to have doormat heroine's that screams 'desperado' and 'needy'.
I can take this hero being a jerk and blowing hot and cold but I would have taken it better if the heroine didn't give in so easily EVERY TIME. I mean wear is her pride? She thinks the right way but contradicts herself each time by acting like leech! Says the right things then ruins it by her actions by accepting him back!

SPOILER ALERT

So throughout the book he goes on about having 747 baggage, and when she spoons him from behind for the first time he freaks and says nasty things to her before kicking her out. Now, she's meant to be a counsellor for homeless and troubled kids and she can't figure out what the hell is bothering him?
The heroine to me is weak. Hence, the 2 star is all about her. She affected the book that much.

An interesting storyline

A good story line but several of the chapters/plot line could have been fleshed out a bit more. I would have also liked a bit more information about the different totems as well. Also, some of the transitions are rough and it feels as if its of information are left out. The editing and overall writing quality are better in this book than the first. Both this one and the previous book ended on a decent cliffhanger, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

First time I read the book I felt there were parts missing but still was a nice continuation of the first book. Now that the upload error has been fixed and the complete version is up the story makes so much better sense. I had to read the entire book again because the parts that were left off in error are all over the book. Reading with the error fixed the story is so much more fleshed out. Looking forward to reading the next one.

As one of the authors, I am obviously biased. However objectively reading the entire book I am very much impressed with the scope and quality of the contributions. Many of the authors have written books on their chosen subjects, but distill them here with grace and thoroughness. There are many sub-genres contributing to the power and beauty of Asian theatre normally glossed over in especially Western-trained academics' accounts that are here given full articles and chapters: music, masks, dance, architecture. Gender in traditional and modern theatre, and the rise of spoken-word drama are given full chapters. And the various intercultural aspects of traditional and modern theatre, and Shakespeare adaptations, should be of immense interest to scholars of post-colonial and performance studies. The musical, the most popular and the least documented, of modern theatre in Asia, is given a full chapter. The selection of authors, including many Asians and women, is commendable. Kudos to editor Siyuan Liu for assembling this rich, encompassing volume, which succeeds as a collection of well-articulated individual voices rather than an encyclopedic consistency of tone and content.
