About the Author
KRISTIN HENSON first started learning American Sign Language when she was a student at Rochester Institute of Technology, which has a significant deaf population. Her dorm mates were more than happy to "help" her out. She once signed "I want a large pizza" to the worker at the school's dining hall, only to discover that her friends had taught her to sign "I want lesbian vagina." Since then, Henson has become fascinated with learning dirty phrases in ASL and sharing them with the world at large.

Non-qualified author, incredibly offensive to Deaf and ASL community
By ICEWORM
This book is based on a series of vlogs that feature the author signing phrases in what she terms American Sign Language (ASL), but is not. She is not a fluent user of the language, and so anyone buying this book under the false impression that they will actually learn how to use ASL in any context, smutty or otherwise, will be getting ripped off, and also does anyone who buys this book really want to go up to a Deaf person and have the first thing they say to a stranger in their language be a dirty phrase? NOT worth your time or money.

Hack material
By keith Wann
If you are going for the shock value then do the research and find the truly smutty signs from the language users. This book is equivalent to a non Spanish speaker printing ''Spanish swearing' and their only exposure was a bus trip through east la and phonetically trying to reproduce the sounds they heard with total disregard with the grammar rules "pootah".

All these negative reviews are not surprising since many college and university ASL teachers contacted the publishers of this book before they printed it and told them this book was a scam with no foundation in sign language language.

The Fertile Crescent: Gender, Art, and Society, by Judith Brodsky, Ferris Olin, Kelly Baum, Margot Badran, Gilane Tawadros

The Fertile Crescent examines the work of 24 women artists of Middle East heritage: Negar Ahkami (Iranian), Shiva Ahmadi (Iranian), Jananne Al-Ani (Iraqi), Fatima and Monira Al Qadiri (Kuwaiti), Ghada Amer (Egyptian), Zeina Barakeh (Lebanese), Ofri Cnaani (Israeli), Nezaket Ekici (Turkish), Diana El Jeiroudi (Syrian), Parastou Forouhar (Iranian), Ayana Friedman (Israeli), Shadi Ghadirian (Iranian), Mona Hatoum (Palestinian), Hayv Kahraman (Iraqi), Efrat Kedem (Israeli), Sigalit Landau (Israeli), Ariane Littman (Israeli), Shirin Neshat (Iranian), Ebru Özseçen (Turkish), Laila Shawa (Palestinian), Shahzia Sikander (Pakistani), Fatimah Tuggar (Nigerian) and Nil Yalter (Turkish). These artists all explore matters of gender, homeland, geopolitics, theology and the environment. The authors in this volume address transnationalism and the interaction between Muslim culture and Jewish, Christian and Euro-American cultures, resulting in U.S. and European relationships that are sometimes congenial and at other times problematic. The book also addresses the Middle East’s cultural diaspora in black Africa and South Asia. The Fertile Crescent is published in conjunction with a fall 2012 multi-venue exhibition at Rutgers and Princeton Universities and the Arts Council of Princeton/Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.

Review
This catalogue for an exhibition held at multiple venues at Rutgers and Princeton Universities makes a substantial contribution to an understudied topic bridging the disciplines of art, art history, and gender studies: the transnational discourse of women artists of the Middle East. Four short but well- illustrated essays provide important context for the work. Brodsky and Olin, exhibition curators and cofounders of the Rutgers University Institute of Women and Art, explain the irony of the title in their essay " The Fertile Crescent: Gender, Art and Society: Unavailable Intersections." Badram contributes " The Art of Revolution in Egypt: Brushes with Women", which contains lucid interpretations of works by Huda Lutfi, Nadine Hammam, and Souad Abdel Rasoul. "Art, Precarity, Biopolitics" is penned by Baum, and Tawadros offers " Slipping away (or Uncompliant Cartographies)." The catalogue portion includes statements and biographical essays for the artists; among the many included are Shiva Ahmadi, Ghada Amer, Zeina Barakeh, Parastou Forouhar, Mona Hatoum, Ariane Littman, Shirin Neshat, Laila Shawa, Shahzia Sikander, and Nil Yalter. The excellent color illustrations, including many video stills, serve as an important additional scholarly resource. (E. K. Mix Choice)

From the Author
Like any story, Fine Wine started with a simple idea: an assassin makes a deal. The story was a bit of an experiment, as I wanted to see if I could write something short. Like really, really short, while still telling a complete story. You see, I'd tried this in the past; every effort turned into a much longer work than what I had originally anticipated. Fine Wine, however, went as planned, taking all of an hour or so to get the first draft down.

In the process of writing the story I discovered a character I liked enough to want to revisit. So I wrote Killing the Dead, which was planned as a longer, more involved story meant to reveal a bit more about the character and the world he lives in. With the first two tales forming a base for the character, I decided to expand the series by introducing additional supporting characters, a number of organizations whose motives our witty assassin finds himself opposed to for one reason or another, and a diabolical plan which just might mean the end of everything the Assassin Without a Name holds dear. This larger direction starts with Night of Zealotry and continues into subsequent stories from there.

Each story is a tale unto itself, however, so no cliffhanger endings. While I want readers to come back for the next story, I also want them to leave with a sense of fulfillment. I know how some readers feel about serial style works; rest assured, the Assassin Without a Name series is not a collection of serials, but actual short stories and novellas, each with its own beginning and end.

I hope you enjoy following along with the principal character in theseshorts as I write more of them. Who knows? Maybe he'll get a novel of his own someday.

Nice Short Story
By Michael Gallagher
This is a good, quick-hit (and dark) short story I read during my lunch break at work, which is ironic considering the scene of this story. While taking less than five minutes to read, the author quickly get you having a visual of the surroundings and situations, and left it with a different ending than you would expect. If you enjoy reading a well-written short story, I would recommend this one especially since it is free here in the Amazon Kindle store.

"But something about the cut didn't feel right...there wasn't even a single, glistening trickle of gastric juice seeping out..."
By Don Kidwell
Author sucked me into the story with aplomb given what appeared to be a grisly scenario only to flip it sunny-side up with comic dialogue making for a great, short read. I'll definitely be looking for more material from this author as he comes up with some clever material!

Good story with a bit of dark humor
By R.M. Prioleau
I'm a sucker for assassin stories, and decided to give this one a shot. For a short story/flash fiction, I thought it was good, but I think there could've been a little less dialogue and a little more action. The hero, who is an assassin has been tasked to kill a merchant, but the twist at the end of the story leaves one to wonder the hero's motives and his true 'skill' in the deathly arts (and also adds a nice touch to showcase the hero's weakness).

The story itself is essentially dialogue between the assassin and the merchant, but I think the author could have done so much more with the 1500 or so words to really make this short piece moving.

The Structural Evolution of Morality, by J. McKenzie Alexander

It is certainly the case that morality governs the interactions that take place between individuals. But what if morality exists because of these interactions? This book, first published in 2007, argues for the claim that much of the behaviour we view as 'moral' exists because acting in that way benefits each of us to the greatest extent possible, given the socially structured nature of society. Drawing upon aspects of evolutionary game theory, the theory of bounded rationality, and computational models of social networks, it shows both how moral behaviour can emerge in socially structured environments, and how it can persist even when it is not typically viewed as 'rational' from a traditional economic perspective. This book also provides a theory of how moral principles and the moral sentiments play an indispensable role in effective choice, acting as 'fast and frugal heuristics' in social decision contexts.

Review
Review of the hardback: 'This is an important book for philosophers as well as social scientists. It clearly models how pro-social behavior can emerge in social networks, and shows which network structures are most conducive to the development of co-operation, trust or fairness. The book advances our understanding of evolutionary games, since it makes them more realistic and applicable to the complex social structures we live in.' Cristina Bicchieri, University of Pennsylvania

Review of the hardback: '... this work is certain to be invaluable to anyone following the road laid by Brian Skyrms. Additionally, I recommend this book to many of those unconvinced about the possibility of making the leap from an explanation of thin morality to a thick account. ... this work makes an important contribution to political philosophy and to the social sciences more broadly.' Right Answer, Wrong Arguments
By Herbert Gintis
J. McKenzie Alexander is a philosopher at the London School of Economics. Like several other moral philosophers, he had read extensively in the evolutionary game theory and agent-based simulation literature, and each of his substantive chapters is an extensive exercise in modeling and simulating some aspect of moral life---fairness, trust, cooperation, and retaliation. "Evolutionary game theory," he says (p. 291), "coupled with the theory of bounded rationality and recent work bridging the gap between psychology and economics, provides what appears to be a radical restructuring of the foundations of moral theory." It is refreshing indeed to find a moral philosopher capable of expressing such elementary, yet widely ignored truths as "our moral beliefs are simultaneously relative to our evolutionary history and our cultural background, but at the same time objectively true" (p. 291). Why objectively true? Because our moral beliefs are just as much a material force in the world as our capacity to metabolize nutrients, and truth in this case means exists.

Alexander's basic premise is that human beings are "bounded rational," so we are incapable of maximizing, expected utility theory is all wrong, traditional game theory is all wrong because it depends on the rational actor model, and boundedly rational actors are not rational. Given their bounded rationality, social norms fill in to tell people what to do, and the social norms that promote individual well-being emerge, through the Darwinian process of cultural evolution, to dominate social life. Thus, we are all best off if we take the moral high road, rather than trying to scheme our way to higher payoffs.

Alexander is certainly not the first to claim that behaving morally is in our best interest, not because we might get caught and punished, but because moral rules embody a deeper understanding of human nature than our poor, beleaguered, bounded rational minds. Aristotle's virtue ethics rather neatly---the philosopher determines what is virtuous, and the citizens follow their prescriptions, much as we ingest the medicaments prescribed by our physician. Indeed, I think this is a correct position, and there is a not inconsiderable body of experimental evidence to the effect that, for most people, doing the right thing makes them happier than doing the immediately pleasurable but selfish or immoral thing (although I personally am not completely sorry for some of the selfish and immoral acts I have committed---they make for a richer fantasy life in my twilight years---just kidding, of course).

I recommend this book for its four chapters of applied evolutionary game theory, although I think his arguments attempting to justify his position are just wrong. I will go through them, one by one.

Most important, Alexander believes our moral constitution is purely cultural as opposed to biological. He does not say why he believes this, although he makes the elementary error of thinking that it must be one or the other, when in fact, we are the product of gene-culture coevolution, to the point where it is impossible to tease out autonomous cultural or genetic elements, except in the most elementary cases (e.g., what biologically nutritious foods we find ethical to eat is culturally determined, and the physiology of shame is culturally universal). There is absolutely nothing in this volume that supports his prejudice against genetic predispositions for prosocial behavior.

Part of Alexander's problem is that he tries to support complex and sophisticated arguments with toy evolutionary game theoretic models that have only a tenuous relationship to social reality. For instance, his criticism of Gibbard is that his argument depends on coordination games, whereas in fact, these are only one of three types of two-player games (p. 278). However, the fact that there are other possible scenarios for strategic interaction does prove that they are all equally important and applicable. Indeed they are not, and Gibbard's treatment is quite insightful.

Similarly, in dealing with retaliation (Chapter 6), he takes the most obvious game, the Ultimatum Game, and show six different ways how rejections of positive offers is possible if one makes enough special assumptions (e.g., agents are imitators on a one-dimensional grid). What a glorious waste of time! This chapter, and the others on specific human moral behaviors, are classroom exercises in manipulating toy games, with no systematic relevance to reality. Alexander would have done better to look at the experimental literature on cooperation and punishment, and the biological/economic models of the evolution of fairness and reciprocity norms. Curiously, these go completely unmentioned. Nor does Alexander bother to state the fundamental theory of evolutionary dynamics with replicators: all stable equilibria are Nash equilibria of the stage game. This would have allowed him to drop almost all the replicator dynamic arguments in the book.

This point can be expressed more completely as follows. Suppose we have a population of agents who are assigned in each period t = 1,2,3,.... to groups of size n, where they play an n-player game G. Suppose a player's strategy is written in the players genome, rather than being learned. Suppose an individual's payoff in this game represents his biological fitness, so at the end of each period, individuals reproduce in proportion to their success in playing this game G, and their offspring genetically inherit their strategies for playing the game.. We call G the "stage game" and the reproduction process a "replicator dynamic." In a replicator dynamic, then, a particular strategy increases or decreases in frequency in the population according as its payoff in playing G is above or below average for the population. The replicator dynamic is thus simply a version of Darwinian evolutionary dynamics. The fundamental theory of evolutionary game theory says that every stable equilibrium of this evolutionary dynamical system is a Nash equilibrium of the game G.
For instance, suppose G is the two player Prisoner's Dilemma. Then, the only stable evolutionary equilibrium is mutual defect for all players. Suppose the game is the Hawk-Dove game, which has a unique Nash equilibrium in mixed strategies. Then, the only stable evolutionary equilibrium will have a fraction of Hawks equal to the probability of playing Hawk in the Nash equilibrium of the game, and, a fraction of Doves equal to the probability of playing Dove in the Nash equilibrium of the game. Doing simulations is such situations is superfluous---we know before we start where we will end up.

Alexander's support for the position that "bounded rationality" is antithetical to the rational actor model and the expected utility axioms is perfectly standard, and follows Gigerenzer and Selten, who, despite their eminence and indeed brilliance, are just simple wrong in the arguments on this point. There is no contradiction between bounded rationality and the Savage axioms or any other of the standard justifications of the rational actor model. Indeed, preference transitivity can be deduced from elementary evolutionary principles, and all surviving species have utility functions, just as described in the first-year graduate textbook. Of course, humans have limited information processing capacities, but no physically existing entity can avoid such limitations, by the very principles of quantum mechanics and information theory. The idea that game theory assumes that people can solve complex games is just wrong. Game theory has many problems (including assuming that rational agents actually play Nash equilibria), but this is despite the fact that they use the rational actor model, not because of it.

Finally, while much of morality is clearly individually fitness-enhancing, I do not think all moral rules arose because they were in the interest of individual fitness (see for instance Herbert Gintis, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Altruism: Genes, Culture, and the Internalization of Norms", Journal of Theoretical Biology 220,4 (2003):407-418. I think all plausible models of the evolution of human morality involve group selection in the context of hunter-gather societies in which hunting and territorial defense led to the emergence of truly altruistic genetic predispositions in our species, and the reason behaving morally is in our interests today is because we have these prosocial genetic predispositions, and we care about our self-image in social life, where people judge us by our degree of prosociality.

Bees, Wasps, and Ants: The Indispensable Role of Hymenoptera in Gardens, by Eric Grissell

Few insects are more important than bees, wasps, and ants. They maintain the garden’s biological balance, fertilize vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and recycle nutrients within the soil. It’s no exaggeration to say that a garden can’t be understood without an understanding of its insects.

Bees, Wasps, and Ants explores the importance of the Hymenoptera and explains how gardeners can encourage (or discourage) them in the garden. Part One includes a summary of their biology and a tour of what role they play in each part of the garden. Part Two takes a closer look at the individual groups within the family, including sawflies, horntails, woodwasps, parasitic wasps, predatory wasps, bees, and ants.

Bees, Wasps, and Ants is sure to persuade even the most insectphobic reader to invite these fascinating creatures into their gardens.

From Booklist
If ever a group of garden creatures gets a bad rap, it’s bees, ants, and wasps. Yet, as Grissell so strikingly points out, most of the time their negative reputation is either grossly overstated or decidedly undeserved. Although the role of the order Hymenoptera in garden settings is of vital importance, most homeowners and quite a few gardeners do whatever they can to remove nests, hills, and hives at first sight. It’s a knee-jerk reaction that can have devastating results, for these creatures are essential for pollination, fertilization, and even pest-control. Reviewing their impact, revealing their habits and habitats, and profiling them via such inventive terms as the garden’s “cows,” “wolves,” and “police,” Grissell strikes a fine balance between scientific examination and anecdotal evidence. Although not sufficiently illustrated to serve as a field guide, Grissell’s extensive exploration of this insect order is highly informative and genuinely useful. --Carol Haggas

Great introduction to a feared and misunderstood group of insects
By Afan of Sitagyl Manor
I absolutely love this book and find it to be a most valuable guide to a much-feared group of insects. As a shutterbug new to macro photography of insects, I have become immersed in a world most people ignore unless they are frightened by an aggressive Hymenopteran. The photos in this book are first rate and have helped me with identification of my own tiny subjects. As the author points out, this is not a field guide per se, but a sound introduction to the natural history and biology of these insects. Their roles in nature are complex and fascinating. This book is aimed at serious students of insect life and garden enthusiasts. The writing is clear albeit somewhat technical at times, which is to be expected as it is a science book. The author is especially good on the Parasitoid Wasps, the main focus of his own professional work in the field. If you enjoy above average science books and have an interest in gardening or insect photography you should get yourself a copy of this book.

Informative and entertaining
By Barbara Pleasant
To an amateur entomologist like me, this book is a dream come true. Eric Grissell uses enough scientific lingo to keep topics clear, but often wanders into personal territory as he explores the lives of bees, wasps and ants. Some of his stories are surprisingly funny!

As head garden writer for Mother Earth News, I initially picked up this book to learn more about wasps and hornets -personal passions for years. Now Grissell has me interested in ants. Although I don't have room for more books, I'm making room for this one next to Whitney Cranshaw's Garden Insects of North America. If you're fascinated by insects, you need both.

An Essential Book for the Organic Gardener and Bug Watcher
By David B Richman
Eric Grissell was one of my instructors in a short course in parasitic Hymenoptera that I took at the University of Maryland a number of years ago. All of my instructors were excellent and Eric was particularly good. It was thus with some interest that I picked up his book "Bees, Wasps, and Ants: The Indispensable Role of Hymenoptera in Gardens" at the local library. I was not disappointed as his book is a gem! With well-written chapters and beautiful color photographs it is just what the home organic gardener and insect watcher would want to understand an important component of the ecosystem. As it turns out the Hymenoptera contains among its members numerous natural enemies of insect pests and a plethora of pollinators. While ants may sometimes invade our homes and bees, wasps and ants my sting us, they more than make up for their faults (from our point of view) by the numerous services that they provide. One could easily get lost just in studying their behavior, but the fruit and vegetable crops that they protect and pollinate are a great bonus. Eric Grissell has provided a fascinating glimpse of their secret life within our backyards and has in the process provided the home gardener with essential knowledge for the production of a bounty of pesticide-free crops.

I recommend this volume without reservation!
