All the bases covered

This book is an depth look at how to cook the various cuisines of Kerala, be it Hindu, Christian or Muslim. All the recipes have techniques explained well. This is a book for a serious cook, not one of the coffee table ones. No offense to any of the authors but I would compare this to Paula Wolferts "Couscous and the other good food from Morocco"

This text presents material common to a first course in vibration and the integration of computational software packages into the development of the text material (specifically makes use of MATLAB, MathCAD, and Mathematica). This allows solution of difficult problems, provides training in the use of codes commonly used in industry, encourages students to experiment with equations of vibration by allowing easy "what if" solutions. This also allows students to make precision response plots, computation of frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes. This encourages students to learn vibration in an interactive way, to solidify the design components of vibration and to integrate nonlinear vibration problems earlier in the text. The text explicitly addresses design by grouping design related topics into a single chapter and using optimization, and it connects the computation of natural frequencies and mode shapes to the standard eigenvalue problem, providing efficient and expert computation of the modal properties of a system. In addition, the text covers modal testing methods, which are typically not discussed in competing texts.

Outstanding Text and Reference Book

I am currently teaching the introductory course in Mechanical Vibrations at California State University, Fullerton, and chose Dr. Inman's book after evaluating several different texts. The material is well organized, there are numerous practical examples, and the book is easy to read. The book contains substantial material on nonlinear vibrations, and numerical solutions, items that are of immense practical importance. Methods of solution are covered in three different software packages, MathCAD, MATLAB and Mathematica, which, when combined with the quantity of homework problems, allows the Instructor to tailor the class to his or her own preferences.
Additionally, I am also a practicing engineer, currently employed by a manufacturer of vibration exciters, and have found the material on vibration testing to be accurate and informative. This makes the book valuable as a reference, as well as a textbook.

I am taking a graduate course in linear vibrations and I have been using this book because I find it way easier to understand than the more "advanced" one recommended on the course outline.
The book explains how to use MatLab for Vibration analysis, which is a very powerful tool.

I think that it is a great textbook, which gives students a good balance between the theory and practice, with the nice emphasis of computer capabilities in the area of vibration. I like it very much and I am sure that many students in this country would share my opinion.

The Journey songbook is the companion sheet music collection to Greg Maroney s 2010 CD release by the same name. Most of the eleven pieces have been transcribed note-for-note and a few have small changes for clarity and playability (I know this because I proofed the sheet music). The pieces appear in the book in the same order that they appear on the CD, so it is possible to achieve the same seamless flow of the album at your own piano. Maroney is an amazing pianist, so this is not the easiest sheet music out there, but none of the music is impossibly difficult either. A few of the pieces would be playable for an upper-intermediate player, but most are more early-advanced to advanced. There is a nice range of key signatures from A minor (no sharps or flats) to F# major (six sharps) with just about everything in between. There are a few reaches of more than an octave, but pianists with smaller hands can always roll those chords or shorten them (there are not enough of these to present a problem). The transcriptions have a nice, roomy layout with very clear notes and lots of white background, making them easy to read and understand quickly. Dynamics and expression are clearly marked, and a few tricky passages have fingering. The length of the pieces ranges from five pages to fourteen. I have been a big fan of Greg's music for a lot of years, and have taught many of his pieces to my advancing students. It is such a pleasure to sit for an hour or so playing his music and discovering how he plays the pieces himself. Greg's sheet music is available from his website, and I recommend it very highly!

Greg Maroney is a pianist and composer of classically influenced New Age solo piano music. His music is emotionally rich yet peaceful, capturing the beauty and majesty of life. He can be compared to other masters of contemporary piano such as Wayne Gratz, David Lanz, Michael Dulin, Liz Story, David Nevue, and Jim Brickman. Greg currently lives with his wife on a small farm in south central Pennsylvania. They have chickens, raise a great deal of their own food, and seek to live peacefully and in harmony with nature.

I read this book (cover to cover) in the midst of Master's thesis work. The authors' words often reassured and heartened me. I appreciated their sensitivity and thoroughness. On several projects since, I've wished I had a copy at hand. I look forward to the 2002 edition to include much more about computerized research considerations.
