"Big Data" is it SMART or are you SMART- ask Bernard Marr

Although I have always worked with Engineers and Software professionals in many techn ical areas and Industries I am not a Technical person, but I read and am able to comprend or to pick up the nuances of the particular Industry.

I always like to read Industry Leading Professionasl who have the ability to take complex subjects and make it understandable to Lay practicioners in the Industry.

Bermard Marr has done that in " Big Data". He takes the Concept of "Big Data" which has become the Hot Topic in every area of Business optimization and potential innovative opportunity for the next 20 years and offers many insightfull case studies to KISS "Keep It Simple s"

Mr Marr takes the HYPE of what do we do with our data; and breaks it down into SMART Data. Five steps to learn how to ask the right QUESTIONS about your company and the DATA internal and external so that the Questions get answers that are relevant to solutions that will benefit your business or application.

How and why SMART decisions are based on SMART analytics

Much of what I know about "big data" and analytics I have learned from Tom Davenport and again I express my deep gratitude to him. In addition, I have read several dozen books by other authors on one or more aspects of one or both subjects and have learned much of value from them, also. I now share four convictions based on what I have learned thus far. First, the name of the game is not Big Data. Rather, it is having a sufficient quantity of the right data. Also, even then, enough of the right data is essentially worthless unless and until they guide and inform (a) the right decisions and (b) effective execution of those decisions. Also, all right data are important but some are more valuable than others. Finally, the relevance, importance, value, and sufficiency of data can change, sometimes significantly.

For more than two decades, at least since Tim Berners-Lee devised the concept of a worldwide web, business leaders have been struggling to identify their companies' information needs and then fill them. These are critically important decisions. In recent years, this process has been facilitated, indeed expedited by various electronic technologies, so that better decisions can be made and then executed much faster than ever before.

I agree with Bernard Marr: "The marriage of data and technology is radically changing our world and making it smarter. And business much become smarter too...Today the really successful companies understand where their customers are and, perhaps more importantly, what they are doing and where they are going. They know what is happening as it's happening and they allow that information to guide their strategy and inform their decision-making. Companies that don't embrace the SMART revolution will be left behind." Quite true.

Marr introduces this acronym, SMART, for the business model he recommends:

S = Start with strategy
M = Measure metric s and data
A = Apply analytics
R = Report results
T = Transform business

He devotes a separate chapter to each component of the model. "When you approach data (big and small) and analytics from this narrower more focused and practical perspective you can get rid of the stress and confusion surrounding Big Data, reap the considerable rewards, and 'Transform your business.'"

In this context, I am reminded of Peter Drucker's observation, "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."

Once again, I agree with Bernard Marr: "SMART business is a solution that encourages us all to step back from the hype and noise around data - especially Big Data - and take stock of where we are, where we are trying to get to and what data and tools we can employ to get there...One thing is for sure, Big Data and analytics are here to stay and it's only going to get more sophisticated. We need to embrace it, operate it effectively, deliver value in exchange for the data and apply its significant benefits for the betterment of our world."

Business leaders who are determined to help their organizations use smart big data analytics and metrics to make better decisions and improve performance will find in this volume almost all that they need to pursue that immensely important strategic objective.

Easy to read and well written - A must have for your libray

Bernard knows Big Data. I love the SMART approach he takes in presenting the concept and use of Big Data. The acronym SMART has been used with different meaning in numerous environments with great success. SMART in my world of simulation meant Simulation and Modeling for Acquisition, Research and Training. I designed class rooms using SMART (the company) technology. Bernard has done a SMART thing with Big Data, for he is very SMART. With all fun aside, this is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about Big Data. Written in plain language, well organized with ample graphical aids, I am sure you will love it.

I would completely disregard the one and two star ratings (one each). They are entitled to their wrong opinion. Perhaps they should try to write a book that all audiences can take in. It is difficult to do and Bernard has done it very well.

Hunter's Way with different characters

Many people have given this book a bad review because they feel that it's basically Hunter's Way but with two new characters, however aren't most of her novels like this? Like one reviewer basically stated, two women meet (usually one out and the other either in the closet or questions their sexuality once meeting the other woman). Both are unable to be together for one reason or another but in the end things work out in their favor. The only difference are the events leading up to the ending. Either way Gerri Hill is one of my favorite authors even though everyone knows how her novels will end (at least when it comes to the love story.

That being said, this novel wasnt as good as Hunter's Way but was still a good read. The ending, that some people are complaining about, is a bit upsetting however Gerri Hill has posted something on her website in response to some people's questions. [...]

more of the same & a boring mystery

the romance is this book is according to a pattern which readers of gerri hill have by now come to be familiar with. they start out as friends, cannot help but fall in love, try to deny it first but cannot help the gravity of their feelings. been there, read that. as if in compensation, the love scenes are quite hot.
what really killed me was the mystery, however. it was just boring, boring, boring. and to end the book with a cliff-hanger, that seemed to be quite lazy.

Last in the series and I was disappointed!!

This one was all about getting to know a new set of partners and in the beginning, seemed VERY similar to how Tori and Sam got together. In some ways, even though the characters backgrounds were slightly different, there were still some similarities. I did expect much Tori and Sam interaction here, so I was not disappointed by the lack of it. The case was kind of weird but interesting enough. My biggest issue? The ending!! Oh my god! I won't spoil it, but when you read it, you'll know what I mean. 3 stars exactly on this one folks.

My favorite Jasmuheen book yet!

This book is absolutely amazing! There is nothing else like it anywhere that I've found. I've read nearly all the "living on light/prana/chi" books and websites I could and this is by far the most important resource yet. And no Raw Food book comes anywhere near this one!

The central theme of "The Food of the Gods" is that all human beings (and their bodies - physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) desire Love. This is the purest most basic desire that we have. And we spend our entire lives seeking Love. Unfortunately, most of us seek Love in rather disfunctional ways and never fulfill this inner desire and outer search. Instead of seeking Love directly from the Source that is within our Selves and creating our Universe (because we were never taugh how and never knew we could), we settle for what we think is the next best thing - sex, drugs, rock and roll, etc...

Very interesting concept...but is it real? Can we really experience Love just by intending to do so?

Sure we can! And I do whenever I want. This isn't some pie-in-the-sky conceptual hocus pocus love. This is real Soul-satisfying Love. You'll know it when you feel it. And you can feel Love too, much more easily by doing the exercises in this book. All it takes is a sincere desire, a focused intention, and a letting go of the doubt.

I highly recommend this book for anyone getting ready to take their spiritual practice to the next level. Ya never know, eventually you too may feel the Love so deeply and so frequently that all your cells with be nourished by it and never desire physical food again. After all, the Love we get by eating is nothing compared to the Love of Self/God/etc.

A great complimentary book to help your mind better grasp the reality of this form of nourishment is Gregg Braden's The Divine Matrix. It includes real scientific data (quantum physics) that confirms that we have the inborn ability to influence our cells and create the realities that we desire. The Universe was always built this way. We just never realized it until NOW.

Amazing book on Nutrition

Quite simply the best book on nutrition on the planet today. I salute Jasmuheen for being courageous enough to write this book, along with her earlier books on the subject of Prana Nourishment bringing forth this new, yet ancient, and natural form of nourishment. I say natural as everyone is in fact nourished by prana, it is just that we have forgotten this through eons of time immersed in 3-dimensional reality on this planet. Jasmuheen presents in this book that we just don't have physical hungers but all manner of hungers such as hungers for food, money, sex, love, relationships as part of our identity seeing ourselves as just a physical body. When we plug into the Pranic, the Divine Love flow we are nourished on all levels of our being and as Jasmuheen says all our hungers disappear once we allow our Divine One Within/ God Within, (or whatever term you want to give to this highest aspect of our Divine nature) to run our whole physical-emotional-mental-spiritual bio-system. In this book Jasmuheen provides many techniques for living a dis-ease free lifestyle and is not about telling people to give up their food and live on prana instead. Rather the meditations, lifestyle practises etc presented can allow for an unimpeded and harmonious flow of prana through our bio-system so dis-ease cannot occur where we can live a healthy, happy life. And in fact it's only blockages in our subtle energy patterns created by disharmonious thought and feeling patterns and faulty lifestyle that eventually manifests as dis-ease on the physical level, that we then forced to confront. And if we so choose and feel guided we can considerably reduce our food intake, being free from the need to eat, if that is part of our journey here. There are meditations and mantras provided for one to assist the cells to be re-programmed to take nourishment from the inner realms. Jasmuheen presents a three tier level of pranic nourishment from where one still eats to level 3 where one can free from then need to eat. This provides for a more slower, more gentle but safer and easier conversion process than the controversial pass é 21 day process, and more guaranteed of success. So for those who feel drawn to the idea of pranic nourishment and the amazing benefits on a personal and global level it holds then this manual is full of information on the pranic nourishment process and the role of brainwave patterns and is highly inspiring.

This author recognizes both the inevitability of widespread surveillance technology and the advantages of harnessing its best capabilities within an ethical structure rooted in the needs of the people in society. Due to the current information explosion happening right now, Akhlaque Haque’s new book, Surveillance, Transparency and Democracy – Public Administration in the Information Age”, is a vitally important and contemporary study of the effects of this overload of information on modern day public administrators. Our world contains vast amounts of digital information which is quantitatively growing by leaps and bounds each day. The author realizes that if this information could be managed well, it could bring great benefits to our society and increase governmental accountability to its citizens. However, he also recognizes and warns of the potential misuse of this information in violating constitutional principles and values. He challenges public administrators to balance measurable information with contextual information in their decision-making process. A must read for anyone in the field of public administration and governmental service.

If the topic of surveillance, transparency and privacy is giving you pause than this book is for you and will put your critical thinking into fast forward. With the revelations about the tsunami of data collection on private citizen and the mass data breaches both in the private sector and the governmental sector – there are many who are concerned that our democracy is threatened in this information age. It is refreshing to see a scholarly book on the subject. I found it interesting that Professor Haque stated that he not intending to settle a debate by his book, but rather to open one. If people read this book and enter this important debate, than he will have done his job. Highly recommended.
