About the Author
Jon M. Duff received his Ph.D. in art education from The Ohio State University after undergraduate and graduate study in technology at Purdue University. He then served on the faculty in Engineering Graphics at Ohio State and in Technical Graphics at Purdue. Professor Duff currently teaches a variety of courses at Arizona State University, including modeling, animation, illustration, and technical publishing. He is the author of over 70 technical papers and 17 texts on industrial graphics and has served as a consultant to education, industry, and government for over 30 years

A Classic

As computer-based modelling takes over this function, the fundamentals are in danger of being forgotten. This is a classic and remarkably thorough text on the subject. As someone who reads graphics as part of construction and prototype projects, I've found the book essential to understanding not only the views of parts, but how to see them in their three-dimensional functional aspect. If you ever have to make parts from scratch -- know what they do and how they fit -- this is the book to have on your reference shelf. It is also the basic source for design and even sketching techniques essential to making yourself understood in quick studies and discussions with others. Note, earlier editions are equally relevant.

Ecology is the study of the relationship between organisms and their environment. Correlating morphogenesis and ecology, they have developed a new framework for architectural design that is firmly rooted within a biological paradigm, and thus concerned with issues of higher-level functionality and performance capacity. They have named this approach Morpho-Ecology.

The first part of the book introduces the theoretical and methodological framework for their approach; the second part presents 20 research projects undertaken by students in AA Diploma Unit 4. The thir part contains the proceedings of the 'Differentiated Systems in Nature and Design Symposium' held at the AA, with contributions by Mark Burry, Christopher Hight, Wolf Mangelsdorf, Peter Trummer, Julian Vincent, Michael Weinstock.

Better than expected!

I ordered this book as a hobby figuring that the 200+ pages must have some decent methods to improve my drawing skills. I have been looking for a fashion design instruction book for a long time now. This is certainly an elusive topic to find information on -- even on the web I couldn't find any website that offered any helpful instructions. I have never been able to find anything suitable, especially since I didn't want to invest a lot. This book was a good price that I didn't think would be too much of a loss if I didn't find it useful.

I was thrilled when I received it and immediately opened the book to find everything I had always hoped for. Being that I have no formal art or fashion training, I thought this book was exceptional. It has tons of pages of basic fashion design drawing concepts, templates, body positions. There are so many samples that, with practice, any beginner can really get a good grip on. It's a very good basic introduction to fashion design. Also, for beginners, it's got some pretty good instructions and examples of drawing all parts of the body (head, eyes, mouth, arm, leg, feet, hands, etc).

If you think you might be interested in this area of drawing, get this book! You can't beat the quality for the price. In my opinion, a rare gem!

Excellent Book!

I am very picky about fashion illustration books. My two favorites are written by Kathryn Hagen. Figure Drawing for Fashion Design is my third favorite. The illustrations are very well done. I don't like the way the artist interprets faces and some of the drawings are a bit on the crude side, but overall, the drawings and instructions are very good. The women seem rather masculine, but the proportions are accurate and it is easy to make simple modifications to create more attractive faces with less angular features. I think, perhaps they are angular to emphasize the underlying structure. From what I can tell, most of the faces are the same. White women with high cheek bones and huge lips. I get the feeling there were a few illustrators who contributed to this book, because some of the illustrations are quite fluid and beautiful, while others are lacking. I attended FIDM, and most of what I learned came from my own determination, common sense, and observation of photos in fashion magazines rather than any book that was provided (which, by the way were completely unacceptable!). Had this been our text, I think my (we) did. Although I am fairly good at fashion illustration, there is lots of information that I found useful, and I think this book is an excellent reference for designers at any level of experience. I don't do much fashion illustrations these days as I spend most of my time making custom corsets, but if i did, I would certainly make use of this book. It's far less expensive than Hagen's books, and I like it much more than 9 Heads, which I never cared for. The colored illustrations are ugly (too gaudy and rock star-ish) to me, I must admit, but for someone who isn't really great at rendering fabrics or needs some quick, well proportioned croquis, this book will be very helpful. There are many different models, all shown in various, and even dynamic poses.There are some lovely hands from all different angles, and great examples of all types of foot wear, also from many angles. Those are the sections I found most useful. The section on flats is comprehensive and shows a great deal of detailing including top stitching with various silhouettes. Excellent instruction on how to place a garment on the body, and how to make the fabric look real and drape properly. There is a copy of a production schedule, croguis for flats from different angles (most books have only front and back). It shows how to build a fashion figure from scratch, starting with a stick frame, adding cylinders, then fleshing out the curves, once again, from many different angles, which is not very common in most books of this nature. I would very highly reccomend this book, even if you have only a slight interest or one time need for a fashion illustration reference. Even the less attractive drawings are useful. It's less than $20. Most books of this quality are closer to $100. I wish I had more books like this, and at such a low price, I almost felt like I had stolen something!

The book features a plethora of examples to teach how to draw faces and poses in correct proportion, as seen in professional fashion illustrations. The examples in the book are large, facilitating the use of tracings prior to free-hand drawing. Anyone who wants to learn fashion design, especially teenagers interested in the field, will find this book an invaluable asset.

Design with nature, not against it

I can't believe I am the first to review this book. It was one of the most important books in my library when it first came out over 25 years ago and I still refer to it once a year or so.
Ian McHarg pioneered both a "logical" way to approach human enterprise within the natural world, and the analytic/presentation methodology which is now used by virtually all planners. At least the technicals aspects of the methodology are used; the real struggle to understand the principals behind prioritizing land use is still ongoing.
If you're looking for some clear and easy to understand directions to help get us out of the mess we've made of our world, "Design With Nature" is a good place to start.

Recently re-issued in a 25th-anniversary edition, this book has obviously retained its position. Why? Because it is *the* place to begin an environmental impact statement. It should be on the bookshelf, and engraved in the heart and mind, of anyone connected with, or concerned about, planning for the future.
McHarg takes the simple idea of overlay maps--which may contain any type of information--and builds up a procedure for making the difficult trade-offs involved in resolving competing ideas about land use.
No local community should be without a set of McHarg overlays. Any citizen group concerned about the actions of a 'developer' should be able to prepare its own overlay for the town's McHarg base map, showing its assessement of areas that need protection and areas that are suitable for the proposed use. This may not make everyone happy, but it at least guarantees that the issues and specific sites are understood by all, and that specific concerns have been fairly addressed.

They didn't bunt to move runners along, steal bases to distract the opposing defense, or turn the double play. They just hit and hit until demoralized opponents cried uncle. They didn't win the World Series or even a division title. They couldn't be called champions, but they lived up to another title. They were the South Side Hitmen. Team owner Bill Veeck transformed a hapless 1976 ball club into contenders and big-time draws at the ticket box. New acquisitions Oscar Gamble, Richie Zisk, and Eric Soderholm led the team to a franchise record 192 home runs, while legendary broadcaster Harry Caray led Comskey Park fans through the seventh-inning stretch. The White Sox won 90 games that season (including 22 in an amazing month of July) and finished first in the hearts of baseball fans across the city's South Side.

South Side Hitmen is Dan Helpingstine's second White Sox book published by Arcadia. Chicago White Sox: 1959 and Beyond was released in 2004. Helpingstine is a freelance writer who is also working on a novel about a sportswriter covering a high school baseball season.

Take a trip back to the summer of '77 with the South Side Hitmen!

Awesome book chronicling a surprising yet memorable season of baseball on Chicago's South Side, full of Falstaff beer, softball-type uniforms with big wide collars, more Bill Veeck fan promotions than you could shake a stick at, astounding home runs from "rent-a-players" Richie Zisk and Oscar Gamble, not to mention exciting play from favorites Jim Spencer, Steve Stone, Lamar Johnson, Wilbur Wood, Chet Lemon and Eric Soderholm ("the Poet Laureate of the White Sox"), and the beginnings of Comiskey Park organist Nancy Faust leading the "Na-Na Hey-Hey Goodbye" chant that Sox fans partake in to this day. Helpingstine provides a very informative narrative here, and this book contains one of the most bountiful collections of photographs you'll find from the mid-70s White Sox (most of which were generously provided by Leo Bauby). My favorites among these are a rare photograph of broadcaster Harry Caray with colleague Mary Shane (the first female play-by-play announcer in Major League history... her time in the White Sox booth was limited to the '77 season only), a photo of a Kansas City Royals player confiscating a fan's banner reading "WELCOME ANNUAL PENNANT CHOKERS", a picture of pitcher Terry Forster in the infamous shorts the Sox wore in an August, 1976 game (yes it was from the previous season but the photo still fits here), and a VERY rare photograph of Harry Caray with the Falstaff Beer mascot "Holy Cow". Unfortunately a division championship wasn't meant to be, and one by one the Hitmen moved on (the book closes with a list chronicling "the dismantling of the South Side Hitmen" and all the trades and losses to free agency). Despite that, the magic of the South Side Hitmen lives on with White Sox fans everywhere and this book captures everything we cherish from that one wild, wacky summer.

for those who loved the Sox of '77

Even without making the play-offs the 1977 White Sox will always hold a special place in my heart. If you feel the same way, or are just interested in baseball history - you will appreciate this book. Richie Zisk, Oscar Gamble, Wilbur Wood, etc...and those crazy-awful uniforms - a fun season to be sure. This book brings back many memories and any baseball fan has to appreciate that someone (Dan Helpingstine) would see how special it was. Great photos.

Interesting book on one of the few Good White Sox teams.

Better then I expected though still bit amateurishly written. Maybe that's partly why I liked it to... Great rare photos throughout. I realize that White Sox fans had very little to hang their hat on and that this '77 team was best of rare bunch of good teams. Poor owner Bill Veeck was renown for trading talent he knew he couldn't resign (remember this was the beginning of Free Agency era) but I applaud him for keeping team in Chicago. Fierce Hitters row (Zisk, Gamble, Lemon, Johnson, Spencer, Garr, Soderholm, Downing, etc) playing in that tiny ballpark but their pitching was abysmal.

I think the one thing that didn't like was "laziness" of writer/editor on one specific pic. It showed '77 All Star pic of Richie Zisk , with two players next to him. Well of course it noted (correctly) one was legendary Reggie Jackson. But the other it just described as "Red Sox player". Well that person wasn't exactly obscure or unidentifiable...it was Carl Yastrzemski!!! How do you miss that??? I literally had to double-take the caption underneath it, not believing they couldn't identify him in obvious photo of him,,,he wasn't blurred out, cut out, bad angle, etc...it was Yaz. That obvious "omission" (or an error...the guy was one of the most recognizable players in the 60s & 70s lol) took the book down a notch for me.

Sadly the South Side Hitmen lasted just one season...the last page showing a telltale of what happened to all the players, eventually moving on (not one player finished his career w/the White Sox - Chet Lemon remained the longest, just 4 yrs).

I'd recommend this hard-to-find book but would not pay exhorbitant amount. It has a nice small time feel to it...by a lifelong fan who really cherished this team. But as often happens, something gets lost in the translation - in this case poor sentence structure and poor editing - that keeps it a good, but not great read. For once I'd definitely like to note the photos...many were great. A few were blurry but didn't have issue as they showed a unique feel for this once-in-a-generation good White Sox team that the city embraced so well.

In the long river of human history, if one person can represent the civilization of a whole nation, it is perhaps Master Kong, better known as Confucius in the West. Compiled by pupils of Confucius's disciples half a century after the Master's death, The Analects of Confucius laid the foundation of his philosophy of humanity--a philosophy aimed at "cultivating the individual's moral conduct, achieving family harmony, bringing good order to the state and peace to the empire. Eye-opening translation

This translation is far superior to any other that I have seen. The Analects have always been a difficult and opaque work for me. I have read it several times over many years and have always found at least half the sayings completely incomprehensible. The Waley and Legge translations are dry and dated. Lau and Dawson are easier to read but still leave me puzzled about the meaning of most of the sayings. Some of their notes are useless and distracting, while others merely fail to inform. I was always left thinking of the Analects as a few clever and witty proverbs scattered throughout a strange and impentrable work.

The Huang translation, on the other hand, is clear and easy to read. It is easy to follow the structure of the book. It has just the right amount of notes and they are located just underneath the analect itself--not at the bottom of the page or end of the book where you have to interupt your reading and look for them. The sayings that are easy to understand have no notes. The other sayings have notes that clarify the context and meaning. They are brief and to the point so that they don't get in the way of the text. Things that were impossible to understand are now clear. I find that I am no longer burdened by trying to decipher the meaning. As a result I am now getting to know the character and personality of each of the students, and enjoying their interaction with the Master. This is something I was never able to do before with other translations. Reading the Analects is no longer a chore but an enjoyable journey to a distant, but accessible, culture.

copious notes are a scholars proof. This is a true work

The review above is uninformed. Even if he knows that the main Chinese phonetic system is called pinyin. If one reads the copious notes that back up the research in this translation, one would realize that every character is philologically proven. Whether by the lexicon Shuo Wen, the sea of words or other. This translation is the epitome of scholarly work. There is an unpresedented wealth of information in this book. There has been no one near the ability of Chichung Huang in understanding the ancient cannotations of Chinese characters. He has achieved a far more scholarly level in classical Chinese than any other Chinese scholar and translator that I have ever read. The amount of clear concise research proves it. His work is fluid, concise and true to the original exactly because the translator has the ability to be literal. His contemporaries are lacking in this regard. Ren does translate to mean humanity, as in the founding principles of humanity and rightiousness. Read the introduction please.

Clear and Concise

As I bought this book as a gift for my daughter who cannot read Chinese, I compared this translation with the Chinese versions that I have. To understand the original analects fully, most Chinese books provides explanations and definitions. The author has done an excellent job in providing translations and explanations of the analects at the same time.
