But the sheer volume of stress concentration data is now so large that analysts and designers may have difficulty integrating this information efficiently into design applications.

About the Author
Walter D. Pilkey is the Frederick Morse Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia and a leading authority in the areas of stress and strain in mechanical and civil engineering. He is the author of Formulas for Stress, Strain, and Structural Matrices, Second Edition and Analysis and Design of Elastic Beams, also available from Wiley.

Deborah F. Pilkey is an Engineer/Scientist in the Loads & Environments Department at ATK Launch Systems in Utah. She has been involved with structures technology, loads, dynamics, and production stress analysis of the Space Shuttle's main engines and their solid rocket motors.

The definitive book of stress concentration factors...updated from Peterson's original edition. This is the ultimate source for aerospace engineers dealing with design and analysis. Other engineering disciplines should find it equally useful. The book is more compact, yet thicker than the original but the the figures are very clear and readable. Explanations appear much the same.

Guide to Stress Risers and Other Structural Phenomena

Absolutely essential book for anybody interested in stresses in notched bodies; structural analysts who like to use the 'back of the envelope', finite element analysts, fracture mechanicists; designers in aerospace, rail, heavy machinery, light machinery, medical devices, almost anything you can name. Book has been updated from the original; even if you have the original edition, this 2nd edition is well worth having for your engineering reference library.

I have access to Peterson's original book (older than me?) and to the first edition of this one, published in 1974. I recommend buying used copies of the old ones. They contain the same info and are easier to use since the charts are bigger.

This book is written for the CEOs and other senior leaders of all kinds of organizations as a primer on intellectual property strategy.  I wrote it with the aim that someone could read it on a single plane flight, say from New York to San Francisco, or Zurich to Hong Kong.  It is meant to be accessible and practical and useful -- while grounded in the latest research about the business, economics, law, and culture related to intellectual property.

About the Author

John Palfrey is Henry N. Ess Professor of Law and Vice Dean for Library and Information Resources at Harvard Law School and Faculty Codirector of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. He is the coauthor of Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives and the coeditor of Access Denied: The Practice and Policy of Global Internet Filtering, Access Controlled: The Shaping of Power, Rights, and Rule in Cyberspace, and Access Contested: Security, Identity, and Resistance in Asian Cyberspace (the last three published by the MIT Press). He is a Venture Executive at Highland Capital Partners and practiced intellectual property and corporate law at the firm Ropes & Gray.

Sound advice on dealing with intellectual property

You should think of intellectual property as a flexible asset class that can help your organization in a broad range of ways, according to Harvard Law School Professor John Palfrey in this book. Whether your organization is a for-profit business or a non-profit institution, you should give special consideration to strategies of openness rather than exclusion, especially in the information context.

The author goes on to provide four recommendations on the strategic approach which your organization should take to intellectual property:

1. Consider intellectual property to be an asset class;
2. Be open to what your customers, competitors and others can offer you in terms of intellectual property;
3. Intellectual property is more valuable for creating freedom of action than as an offensive weapon against others;
4. Be creative and flexible in what you do with your intellectual property.

Traditional approaches to intellectual property have been challenged by developments over the past 20 years with the open source movement and the proliferation of Internet services such as YouTube and file-sharing services which skate around the boundaries of intellectual property legitimacy but which copyright owners have been unable to shut down because of their immense popularity and power. Rigid enforcement of rights has become a political act likely to engender community ill-will; hence the wisdom in the author's advice to use openness rather than exclusion as a guiding policy.

In my view the author has succeeded in explaining intellectual property in language which can be understood by anyone. The author has his own views, but manages to steer clear of controversy. The book is short enough to maintain the reader's interest, and it is pitched at about the right level for an executive who needs to understand what intellectual property is and why it is important.

Good read for business managers

Nice compact exposition of the IP space which will enable business managers to get up to speed with both new and old ways of looking at the intellectual property portfolio of any type of company. Reads in about an hour - not terribly in depth of the nuts and bolts, but a great overview.

This book is silly. Virtually content free, it rings with the constant refrain that a strategic thinker will deal with Intellectual Property as an asset class. Duh. The book is free of any practical information or actionable content for business managers.

Bekah and Megan are used to moving and finding new places to shop. This time they are very new in town, barely having unpacked from the latest move with their dad. Taking time away from the boxes, the siblings decide to browse selections at a local clothing store called Perception. However, as Megan will soon discover, much more than Bekah's perception is about to change.

All of the women's clothing seems to be rather skimpy, but when Bekah finds a style of tank top she likes, Megan can't believe she doesn't see the problem with wearing it. First of all, Daddy would have a fit and second of all, as she is quick to point out, Bekah has enjoyed a rather generous recent growth spurt up top.
Bekah, however, seems insistent that the top would look fine and while fitted, not be too bad or inappropriate. In order to prove it, she finds the nearest changing room, a small enclosure at the center of the store.

A few minutes later, Bekah emerges proudly wearing her chosen green tank top, and Megan is only ready for the sister to admit that she was right as usual. Bizarrely though, Bekah seems to love how it looks, no mention of the way it wraps her breasts so tightly it seems anything but proper or dignified.

So she has big breasts, Bekah complains, everyone likes big breasts. Megan is sure her sister is playing some sort of game, though she isn't sure what it might be, especially when she decides the rest of her outfit needs a change to better match the top. One more visit to the changing room and Bekah has a nice short skirt to go with the fitted top, a skirt Megan says completes the look as their daddy is fond of saying of a teenage harlot.

Bekah doesn't care, and the usual levelheaded girl hardly flinches at the comments, not even when Megan explains that harlot means whore. As she puts it, she'd never charge a guy, but something definitely needs to be done about her shoes.

As the joke continues and Bekah takes an innocent trying on of clothing to new extremes, Megan gets more and more worried about their dad showing up to pick them up, finding even one of his precious daughters dressed in such a way. But is this really a joke... and will Megan ever be able to talk some fashion sense into her stubborn older sister?

At Perception, they say Change your Clothing, Change your Perception, but much more may be changing for sisters Bekah and Megan when their shopping is done.
