Quick and Inspiring Read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of stories about famous (and at times infamous) people who converted to Catholicism after many years of wrestling with God. The author handles their often tough life stories with gentleness and understanding, and with special attention to God's grace working through friends and family members who stuck with these individuals in good times and in bad. The list of converts include a king, a gangster, a Nobel Prize winning biologist, a famous mathematician and a number of notable entertainers, actors and writers.

Late Conversions

This was the finest book about conversions to Catholicism late in ones life. It was so "good" I simply could not put it down. It made me realize how fortunate I am to be a Catholic. The author is a gifted writer.

Fascinating tales of paths to God

This slender volume is a quick and easy read which may surprise you with the sheer variety and individuality of the converts. Buffalo Bill rubs shoulders with Wallace Stevens, who scoots over for John Wayne and Gary Cooper. Communist journalist hell-raisers, witty society elite, hardened gangsters, and kings on the run all have one thing in common: in the end they turned to the Catholic Church when they were at the end of their life.

I liked the way that author Karen Edmisten used various stories to point out commonalities between situations. Sometimes all the potential convert needed was one prompting question from a trusted friend. Often conversions are so last minute and private that they are doubted by the world because the internal path was kept so private. (This was something I could relate to as in my own conversion I didn't even tell my husband I was debating questions with God. He was stunned.)

I especially liked the point made in the forward that often life-long Catholics feel as if the deathbed convert cheated by slipping in the door at the last minute. From observing my father, I can say that what is left is the regret for a wasted life which could have been so much fuller of love and purpose, while looking forward there is a joy and peace that we should not begrudge any soul. God loves them to the end and we should at least try to have His vision in mind.

Deathbed Conversions is both entertaining and thought provoking to read. Definitely recommended.

Note, this was a review copy, as if that'd have made any difference to my opinion if I didn't like it (which publishers and authors know to their sorrow.) Nope. This is my opinion. I stand by it.

Every Costumer should own this book

Probably the best book published on the history of costume. It should be on the shelf of every costume designer. Fabulous research and wonderful use of artwork (paintings) to show the historical fashions by date. It is the most comprehensive bible of fashion history in print today. Can't recommend it more highly. My Costume Design professor wants all her design students to invest in this book, as it is invaluable in researching historical dress. She's owned it for over a decade and uses it in the classroom with her students for practically every project.

Pictures galore

This book, published outside of the US as "A history of fashion in the west" is a must for anyone interested in clothing and its developement throught history. All the pictures are primary and the text is helpful and informative. my only regret is that it stops in the 1980's and has not alot on the 1950's. It is quite general but even so is a wonderful book.

I have to admit I really haven't read much of the book, but I don't really need to because the pictures more than speak for themselves. This is a great book for any costume history buff or really anyone who enjoys fashion.

This is a nice little book

This is a nice little book. The author does a good job at introducing JSON and how it fits in with other technologies as a data interchange format. She makes novel analogies to help the reader understand the "why JSON" question and what JSON is meant to do vs. not meant to do.

I would have liked to hear a little more about the author's opinions on past, present, future of JSON. The author is laser-focused on the lesson plan and there are no opportunities here to glean "insider" production experience.

Overall, this book is better than reading a technical specification or trying to piece together disparate blog articles/tutorials online.

Very clear and fast to read JSON book, especially for beginners

Even if you know nothing about programming you will understand this book. It is extremely clear. It is an excellent book to begin learning JSON, JSON Schema, and beginning JSON security vulnerabilities and what to do about them. It was written in 2015 and therefore is more up-to-date than other books. It touches on other related technologies like AngularJS, Node, etc. JSON doesn't care about what language you write in - PHP, ASP.NET, HTML, etc.

This book gives plain English examples, then progresses to simple JSON coding. It does not give a lot of extra examples to work through, but does show what to watch out for, and references to other resources. You can read this book in a day or two, perhaps in a few hours. It's only 112 pages including the index.

If you want to know if what you are crafting is good JSON data, but don't need to understand the in-depth programming of JSON, then this is an especially good book.

If you are a total beginner to programming, or don't know a lot of programming lingo, then this is a great book.

If you already know some JSON, this book is NOT for you, go buy a different book.
